One of the best things about hair is that it grows out and can be changed often. So, unlike an expensive pair of heels that are only on trend for a quarter of the year before the next hot thing gets placed on retail shelves, you can change your hair often and for cheaper. While the off-trend shoes take up space in the murky depths of your closet after the season’s over, you can change your hair and display it front and center.
While I’m speaking specifically to cuts, hair is versatile across the board. Tired of your chocolate brown? In a few hours you can call yourself a fiery redhead. Over those unruly curls? Hello, flat iron. In terms of haircuts, you can always add more length to your hair with extensions. And, of course, you can always chop chop chop away if you want to go shorter. Whatever you do, though, don’t be afraid to experiment.
I chatted with two amazing hairstylists about fall/winter 2012 hair trends to hear what they had to say about the seasons’ hottest haircuts. Glen Goldbaum is a master hairstylist and owner of Glen Goldbaum 72 and Lambs & Wolves salons. Scott Fantana is an expert hair stylist and owner of Christophe Salon Newport Beach.
Perfect Pixie“Pixie is hot right now,” says Fontana. “Look at Emma Watson or Michelle Williams.” He says the look is soft and feminine and shows off a woman’s facial features.
“For the season I like bold, geometric bangs. Almost the opposite of cute and wispy,” says Goldbaum. “This kind of bang will add a strong and sexy flare to any haircut.” He says you can blend your bangs into the rest of your haircut or allow them to make a statement on their own.
From the messy tousled look a la Scarlett Johansson to sleek and chic bobs a la Anna Faris, the medium length bob is definitely in for 2012 and into 2013. The look is sexy and easy to manage as well.
While Emma Stone’s hair is ever changing, her often worn side swept bang is a major hair ‘do’ this season. Ask your stylist for long bangs that frame your face. You’ll be able to show them off or tuck them behind your ears depending on your mood.
“I especially love long hair with very soft surface layers,” says Fontana. “Keep it soft and sexy.” He says to look to celebs such as the Kardashians, Jessica Biel and Jennifer Aniston for inspiration.
Embrace your natural texture this season and save yourself some time in your AM routine by wearing your hair au naturale.
If soft and round layers aren’t doing it for you, consider blunt, chunky layers instead. Goldbaum says they “add texture to straight hair, allowing movement and creating volume.”
Fontana warns that bangs are not for everyone, but if you have the face to pull them off then go for it. He says to keep them “on the shorter side” and a “little rounded at the ends” so they’re piece-y looking.
Opt for a soft, long and rounded bob a la Rose Byrne. This kind of bob is great for those who don’t have really angular and super strong facial features.
Miley Cyrus shocked the world when she took her long brunette hair and turned it into a choppy platinum hairdo. “I love Miley Cyrus,” says Fontana. “she is who she is and doesn’t make any excuses for it.” Channel this teen celeb’s feistiness when heading to your next salon appointment.
“Long, romantic finished waves is what we’re doing in the salon right now,” says Goldbaum. If you’ve got naturally wavy hair, use a product and tool to tame and guide your hair.
“With textured interior layers, mid-length bobs create movement and volume that can be worn wavy or straight,” says Goldbaum. “The fun, playful layers in a mid-length bob create a distressed look on the edges which make it a bob for modern day wear.”
Look to Heidi Klum’s coiffure for this textured cut. She has medium length hair with a bunch of layers that have been pieced out to give the hair more texture.
As opposed to geometric short haircuts that were super hot in the earlier part of the year, Fontana says to try something unstructured with loads of volume.
If you’ve got really curly hair, ask your stylist to create both long and short layers. Goldbaum says the layers will mesh together well and create a carefree look. Think Annalynne McCord’s hair when she wears it curly.
