The sleek, straight style is bigger than ever this season, but it involves a lot of potential risk to the health of our hair.
Are you flat ironing the right way? Many of us aren’t, and this is very dangerous! Stylist, Judy Traborelli, from Giovanni & Pileggi has some great advice on how to flat iron hair without damaging it:
1. NEVER use the iron on over 450 degrees. This will damage the hair to the point of no repair.
2. Only flat iron your hair a few times a week, the maximum amount of times she suggests is twice a week.
3. Don’t wash it out! Judy suggests keeping your hair straight as long as possible by not washing it as often and only retouching a few pieces at a time.
4. Always use a foundation spray before flat ironing. Giovanni & Pileggi has developed the G Mele Anti-Aging Styling Foundation Prep Spray. Created by Philadelphia’s own Giovanni Mele, owner of Giovanni & Pileggi, the Anti-Aging Styling Prep Spray contain proteins, lipids, natural sugars and anti-oxidants to transform dry, dull, lifeless locks to a healthy, strong, shiny and manageable mane.
5. “One of the most common mistakes when using a flat iron is ironing sections of hair that are too big,” says Douglas David, managing partner of Douglas Carroll Salon. This leaves a line in your hair. Also, using an iron that is too hot can severely damage your hair. For blondes, don’t exceed 350 degrees. If you are a brunette and have thick, healthy hair you can go up to 450 degrees, but never over.
Trend Alert! The newest straightening trend is the steam iron. You just add water to the flat iron and instead of drying out the hair, it actually locks in the moisture.
