There is nothing like a good, professional blowout: Bouncy locks, shiny hair and weather-proof style that lasts for days. We all want to know what the big secret is to recreate these looks at home! So recently, I met up with Ali Webb, the founder of Drybar, a national chain of blowout bars that has perfected the art of the blowout, who shared with me some trade secrets on how we too can get the perfect blowout and a quick tutorial on one of their most-requested ‘dos, the Cosmo-Tai. It’s a gorgeous mix of beachy waves and big loose curls. See for yourself how to get the look, below!
1. Using a round brush, dry your hair and make sure it’s completely dry. “I always tell people: plan on spending 45 minutes to dry your hair. It takes about that long, it should take you that long. Most people want to get through their blowout in 20 minutes at home and it just takes longer!” Webb says. The reality is if you want that perfect blowout, there are no real ways to cut corners. It’s also the secret to making sure your blowout lasts for days.
Webb also gives us this tip: “At Drybar, one of our philosophies is we don’t rough dry the hair very much because you get the best result from hair when you’re drying it from wet. Not dripping, but wet so you can really manipulate the hair to do what you want it to do versus the hair starts to dry it’s own curl formation and the creepy things that our hair does.”
2. Twist your hand in a spiral motion when releasing hair from the round brush. You’ll end up with a pretty, spiral wave. Continue until your hair is completely dry.
3. Using either a 1-inch curling iron or wand, wrap 1-2 inch sections of your hair around the iron. Don’t do a spiral wrap; hold the iron so it is perpendicular to your head. Instead of wrapping your hair up all the way to the top of the head, leave about 2 inches of hair at the top loose and uncurled. This will create a relaxed waved that doesn’t start right at the root.
4. Lift a few sections at the crown of your head and tease for some volume. Do this in layers so you don’t end up with a “rat’s nest” effect. Don’t forget to smooth out the top!
5. Finish with a great hairspray. You can loosen your curls a bit more by running your fingers through it, too.
More Tips from Ali:
“Grab a mirror and take a look at the back of your hair. People sometimes forget and you don’t want to look back and have a big mess.”“Work in 1-2 inch sections and make sure they’re completely dry and perfected before moving on to the next section.”“I always tell people to start at the front of their hair. Around the face, fringe and bangs are such an important area, that’s what people see first!”Now that you know the secrets to achieving a salon-quality blowout at home, check out these simple tips to blow dry your hair in half the time.
