As the temperatures begin to fall and we bundle up in our winter jackets, a strange thing happens: we begin to crave change. Perhaps it’s the drab outdoor scenery or the short cold days. One thing is for sure, we start to look for ways to warm up and inevitably it’s our strands that bear the brunt of our fickle minds!
Surprise Pops of ColorWinter is a great time to play with rich hues by adding a few pops of jewel toned highlights.
How to Style:
1. Apply smoothing cream to towel dried hair.
2. Blow dry with a paddle brush to achieve maximum smoothness.
3. Use a flat iron to smooth any unruly locks and give layers around your face a subtle bend on the ends.
Product Recommendation:
A good shampoo and conditioner are the foundation to any style (you wouldn’t build a house on a shaky foundation, would you?). Since the air is drier during the winter months, make sure to nurse your locks with extra hydration. I recommend Onesta’s Hydrating Shampoo & Moisture Balance Conditioner.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style is great for any face shape and for medium to thick densities.
I’ll Take My Waves On The SideTake one look at the red carpet and you’ll find almost every actress is loving the side swept look.
How to Style:
1. Starting with clean dry hair, curl hair vertically.
2. Allow curls to cool before finger combing through.
3. Mist curls with a light hold workable hairspray.
4. Gather hair on the side of your choosing. Secure with hair colored bobby pins.
5. Fluff curls and apply a medium hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
Bobby pins now come in an array of colors other than black. Using bobby pins which match your hair color makes any updo instantly more polished.
Face Shapes and Hair Density:
This style can work on any face shape and hair density. Thinner haired girls should try using clip in hair extensions to add fullness to side swept curls.
The Bigger The Hair The Closer To…Big Victoria’s Secret hair is sweeping the nation and the only cure is…more big hair!
How to Style:
1. Apply favorite volumizing mousse and root lifter.
2. Blow dry using a medium sized round brush.
3. Set hair with large velcro rollers.
4. Allow hair to cool.
5. Remove velcro rollers and mist hair with medium hold hair spray.
Product Recommendation:
Velcro rollers might seem like a tool of the past but, they are like the extra hand you’ve always needed when doing your hair.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
Works on all!
Styling Tip:
When putting velcro rollers in, roll hair away from face to create modern movement and maximum volume at the root.
Sophisticated Low BunEasy and chic! This lovely low bun has been spotted on several red carpets.
How to Style:
1. Start with dry hair and apply dry shampoo for texture.
2. Tease all hair between crown and occipital bone.
3. Smooth all hair into a low pony.
4. Take the ends of the pony and wrap them around. Secure with bobby pins.
5. Mist with a strong hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
Dry shampoo helps give texture to freshly washed hair and helps absorb oil from second day hair (it’s a win-win!). Try SkinnySkinny’s organic dry shampoo. It volumizes, texturizes and refreshes with a lovely mild scent.
Soft Waves Into A Gentle Side BraidBraids have never been so trendy! This chic style is perfect for any winter event or party.
How to Style:
1. Start with dry hair. On the side opposite of part, braid down and around to the nape. Secure with an elastic.
2. Add loose romantic waves to the non braided side with a 1” curling iron.
2. Grab tail of braid and loose ends, pinch together and wind hair up towards nape of neck.
3. Secure with bobby pins.
4. Mist with medium hold hair spray.
Product Recommendation:
Clear elastics are perfect for braid styles because they blend in with any hair color and type.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works for any face shape and hair density.
Sweetly Swept AwaySide swept fringes add drama to the eyes and a sweet romantic feel to any style.
How to Style:
1. Start with towel dried hair and apply your favorite sleek hair product.
2. Using a round brush, bend ends under as you blow dry.
3. Use a medium sized curling iron to touch up as needed.
4. Set with a light hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
Onesta’s Luma is a dry argan oil that leaves hair feeling nourished without feeling heavy. Use on wet or dry hair.
Face Shapes and Hair Density:
This timeless shape can work on all face shapes and hair densities.
Rich RedsRavishing reds pop against the muted tones of winter.
How to Style:
1. Apply volumizing mousse.
2. Blow dry with a medium sized round brush.
3. Polish with argan oil.
4. Mist with light hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
Unfortunately, red hair is the fastest to fade. Luckily, there are some great products to refresh this gorgeous color. Try a tinted conditioner, like Aveda’s Madder Root Conditioner, to refresh faded locks.
Strictly BangsActresses such as Jessica Biel and Zooey Deschanel are giving life to full fringe. Adding a straight across fringe is a great way to change your look without drastically changing your hair color or length.
How to Style:
1. Apply product to towel dried hair.
2. Blow dry using a round brush.
3. Dry fringe using a paddle brush.
4. Use a putty for texture.
Product Recommendation:
A good paddle brush can help smooth and style unruly bangs. Try Aveda’s Wooden Paddle Brush for extra smoothness.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works on all face shapes and medium to thick hair density.
Styling Tip:
Most stylists offer complimentary bang trims between haircuts. Before committing to a full fringe, ask your stylist if they offer one. Quick bang trims keep bangs looking great between your regular haircuts.
Polished PonyPolished ponytails are making a resurgence and are perfect for the work day or last minute party invite.
How to Style:
1. Smooth hair into a ponytail and secure with a clear elastic.
2. Take a small section of hair, wrap it around the elastic and secure with a bobby pin.
3. Mist ponytail with texturizing spray.
4. Mist style with light hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
For perfect beachy texture (sans trip to the actual beach), try Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray for touchable texture and extra body.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works on all face shapes and medium to thick hair density. For fine haired gals, try using clip in extensions to create a thicker pony.
Ice QueenTypically winter is the time to add darker, richer colors to your base color. However, if you are already light, try going lighter. Platinum blondes stand out even more in a room full of brunettes. Go on, shine bright like a diamond!
How to Style:
1. Apply favorite product to towel dried hair.
2. Blow dry with a denman brush.
3. Mist with a light, shine enhancing hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
Bright blondes can easily turn funky colors thanks to minerals in our tap water. Banish brass by using a blue tinted shampoo like Organic Color Systems Silver Shampoo to stay brass-free between salon visits.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works on all face shapes and hair densities.
Rich OmbreThe ombre trend is still going strong but with a slightly different feel. The current ombre trend is more subtle with rich jewel tones leading the way (think copper, amber and ruby tones.)
How to Style:
1. Apply curl enhancing cream.
2. Gently diffuse on medium.
3. Use a 1” curling iron to refine any unruly curls.
4. Set with a medium hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
A diffuser is a must for any curly girl. Universal diffuser attachments are sold at most beauty supply stores, but if you can’t find one, ask your stylist for a recommendation.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works on all face shapes and hair densities.
Twisted UpTwists and braids took over the fall/winter runways this year and what better way to jazz up a pony than with a twist?
How to Style:
1. Smooth pony into a low pony.
2. Divide pony into 2 sections.
3. Wrap sections around each other, creating a twist braid.
4. Secure ends with a clear elastic.
5. Mist twist and pony with a light hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
Try using a pomade on ponytail ends before twisting to prevent shorter ends from peaking out from twist. Try Organic Color System’s Putty for control without the stickiness.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works on all face shapes and hair densities.
Warm Mahogany BrownLooking to spice up your brunette color this winter? Try adding red undertones to create a spicy mahogany brown.
How to Style:
1. On dry hair, use a curling wand vertically to create loose waves.
2. Take large sections and wrap them around the wand barrel like a candy cane.
3. Allow waves to cool then finger comb them.
4. Mist waves with a medium hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
A curling wand is a great way to create loose waves without the uniformity of a curling iron. Try Sultra’s Bombshell for a durable and lightweight wand.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works on all face shapes and hair densities.
The New Top KnotLoved last summer’s top knot? It’s still here, just a little more grown up.
How to Style:
1. Smooth hair into a high ponytail.
2. Braid ends and secure with clear elastic.
3. Wrap braided ends around high pony, securing with bobby pins where needed.
4. Mist with strong hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
For a strong hold aerosol hairspray, try Aveda’s Control Force.
Face Shape and Hair Density:
This style works on all face shapes and hair that is medium to thick hair density.
Super StraightHeidi Klum has been rocking this super sleek long bob and it always looks tres chic and effortless at the same time.
How to Style:
1. Apply a lightweight gel.
2. Blow dry using a paddle brush
3. Apply finishing touches with a flat iron.
4. Mist with a light hold hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
Try Moroccan Oil’s Luminous Hairspray for a light hold with extra sheen.
Face Shapes and Hair Density:
This classic style works for all face shapes and hair densities.
Winter is the perfect time to add rich jewel toned highlights to brighten up skin tones, try bangs, or to try a new style for the day. Medium length hairstyles are the most versatile. Changes (even the small ones!) can drastically alter the style or cut, creating, if only for a short time, a renewed sense of self during these cold, blustery days.
